Sons and Lovers

Sons and Lovers

In the beginning of the book, the book first tells about Mrs. Morel and her unhappy marriage to a miner who always drinks. She has many arguments with him, and some of these arguments results painfully: as an example once she is locked out of the house and got hit on the head with a drawer. To stay away from her husband, Mrs. Morel focuses more on her four children, especially her sons. Her oldest son William is her favorite, and she gets very upset when he takes a job in London and moves away from the family. When William gets sick and dies a couple years after and she gets crushed. She didn't even notice the rest of her children until she almost lost Paul. Paul is her second son as well. From that point on, Paul becomes the focus of Mrs. Morel's life, and the two seem to live for each other.

Paul falls in love with Mirian Leivers, who lives on a farm which is not too far from the Morel family. They have a platonic relationship for many years. Mrs. Morel does not approve her, and this is the main reason that Paul does not marry her although she is willing to. He gets confused in his feelings towards her.

Then Paul meets a woman called Clara Daves, who is separated from her husband. As he becomes closer with Clara, they begin to discuss his relationship with Miriam, she tells him that he should consider their love and he returns to Miriam to see how she feels.

Paul and Miriam sleep together and they are very happy, but afterwards Paul decides that he does not want to marry Miriam, and so he breaks up with her. She gets very upset. He realizes that he loves his mother most..

After breaking up with Miriam, Paul begins to spend more time with Clara and they begin an passionate affair. But she does not want to divorce her husband Baxter and so they can never be married. Paul's mother falls ill and he spends much of his time to looking after for her. When his mother dies at the end, he gets depressed, after the final begging from Miriam, he is left alone, wishing to join his mother in death.

I think "Sons and Lovers" is an excellent title for Lawrence's 1913 story of an unaware mother's emotional relationship with her youngest son. After Williams death Mrs. Morel has no one except Paul. Paul is very friendly to his mother. I like reading this book because it was fascinating especially the part right after Williams death.

The book mainly tells us about the four children: three sons and one daughter. It tells us how the family relates to each other, particularly the mother to her sons. We can also see how far the mother and her youngest son are. Mrs. Morels reaction to Pauls marriage decision with Mirian is negative.

She says to her son "My boy, remember you're taking your life in your hands, nothing is as bad as a marriage that's a hopeless failure. Mine was bad enough, God knows, and ought to teach you something; but it might have been worse by a long chalk". This makes Paul change his mind. I also think that it was a right decision that he did because what his mother told him always became true in the book.

As we go through the book we see that Paul is very confused and can not decide what to do. He is afraid of his mother because he loves her so much and doesn’t want to hurt his mother.
