Jack

Jack Welch

Jack Welch used to be the president and CEO of GE that with its 198.09 billion dollars used to sit on the first place in the Top 100 Companies List by Business Week. Coca Cola takes the second place with 169 billion dollars followed by Royal Dutch/Shell with 151 billion dollars and Bill Gates’ Microsoft with its 148 billion dollars.

Turned 62 on 19 November 1997, Jack Welch announced he would be stripping himself of his duties as both the President and the CEO of General Electric by the year 2000. However, sometime during November of 2000, he anoounced that he was likely to stay for a little while more upon the acquisition of Hannover, a fairly large American company, and he is still the highly energetic Chief Executive of GE despite the open heart operation he has gone through in 1995.

There are lots to say about Welch and his story at GE. According to Welch, leaders of large organizations must possess high doses of energy. I guess this rule should be one of the basic leadership qualities all managers in any of today`s organizations must posess. But, a point that Welch emphasizes to be considerably more important is that these energetic leaders should know how to make use of and divert this energy in order to bring others into action. Running from meeting to meeting like a football coach, Welch conveys the following messages as rules of thumb:

o Never fear change.

o Always fight bureaucracy.

o Benefit from your employees` brains.

o Find out who has got the best ideas and implement them.

o Running a business must a simple thing.

o Never make it too complicated.

o Always face the truths.
